In a move to bolster Tennessee’s labor force, Governor Bill Lee signed Executive Order 109 with the aim of propelling the state to the forefront of workforce development. The Order, which underscores the administration's commitment to aligning educational endeavors with the rapidly evolving market demands, was signed in the presence of participants from the Tennessee Youth Employment Program (TYEP) in Knoxville.
"The state with the workers will win the future, and that's why workforce development has been one of my top priorities since day one," said Gov. Lee, emphasizing the importance of a skilled workforce for attracting investment and fostering economic prosperity. The additional $7 million budgeted for TYEP will not only double its participation but also expand its operations throughout the year. This expansion seeks to further connect young Tennesseans with employment opportunities and address the staffing needs of state businesses.
As part of the 2025 legislative agenda, the Lee Administration has earmarked substantial funds to various programs designed to refine and advance the state's workforce. This includes $25 million allocated to the FastTrack program, which incentivizes businesses to settle in Tennessee, and another $25 million for the RevV initiative, which aims to stimulate research and job growth by linking private enterprises with local research institutions.
Gov. Lee's recent efforts also incorporate a new statewide Micro-Credentialing Program, bolstered with a $6.3 million investment, tailored to provide Tennesseans with short-term, industry-driven certifications. In addition, the administration has allocated $5 million for TNWORKS, designed to create specialized workforce training programs that respond directly to the needs of new and existing businesses. Gov. Lee has fostered the state's Apprenticeship Agency, which is currently administering 433 active programs and nearly 10,000 apprentices, by reinforcing the framework to effectively meet the demands of the labor market.
Throughout his tenure, Gov. Lee has implemented a series of initiatives highlighted by tax cuts exceeding $400 million through the Tennessee Works Act, and a significant investment in education, particularly in vocational and technical training through the Governor’s Investment in Vocational Education (GIVE). The administration has made a noticeable impact with the launch of the Tennessee Youth Employment Program, which has successfully placed over 4,800 young residents in paid positions, providing them with valuable work experience.
The wide array of funding and strategic plans deployed by the Lee Administration underpins a commitment to fostering an adaptive, skilled workforce that can drive Tennessee's competitiveness in a variety of industries. With this infrastructure in place, the state anticipates the cultivation of a labor force that is both versatile in skill and equipped for the challenges of an ever-changing economy.
