Utah has a new face on its Tax Commission, as Gov. Spencer Cox put his trust in John Deeds to steer the state's tax strategy. Announced as the replacement for the respected Michael Cragun, who wrapped up a dedicated tenure since 2009, Deeds comes with a toolkit sharpened on the anvil of state and local tax law.
Applauding his practical approach, Gov. Cox expressed confidence in Deeds' abilities, "John knows how to navigate complex tax issues and keep things grounded in common sense," he said, as per the Utah Governor's Office. The commission, tasked with the hefty load of tax law administration and enforcement, welcomes Deeds at a pivot demanding both expertise and a strong handle on equitable judgment.
Deeds, a partner at Crapo | Deeds PLLC, isn't new to the labyrinthine world of taxes, having previously tangled with state tax issues at Holland & Hart LLP and Crapo | Smith PLLC. A stint as a law clerk in the Utah Attorney General’s Office, Tax and Revenue Division, saw him take the mantle representing the Utah State Tax Commission in court, sharpening his teeth on tax litigation and compliance matters. "It’s an honor to be appointed, and I’m excited to serve the people of this great state," Deeds commented, as obtained by the Utah Governor's Office, demonstrating his readiness to embrace the role awarded him.
