Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has appointed a new judge to the Coconino County Superior Court, choosing an attorney with a history of serving underserved communities. Charles Doughty, who has been serving as Senior Arizona Attorney for DNA-People’s Legal Services since 2020, will be stepping into the role vacated by the retirement of Judge Elaine Fridlund-Horne. Doughty's legal career spans work with the Arizona Attorney General’s Office and Coconino County Public Defender’s Office, according to a release from the Governor's office.
With a focus on providing free legal services in areas such as family law, housing, public benefits, and criminal law, including representation in Hopi and Navajo tribal courts, Doughty has overseen a team of nine lawyers. His commitment to the community was highlighted by Governor Hobbs in her announcement. "Throughout his career, Charles Doughty has shown a commitment to serving people in need," said Governor Katie Hobbs. Having dedicated himself to the law and the people it serves, his abilities as a leader are highlighted.
The appointee brings a vast set of experiences that include navigating complex legal landscapes across state and tribal jurisdictions, which is of particular importance in a county like Coconino with its diverse populace and unique legal challenges. Doughty's tenure at DNA-People’s Legal Services is a testament to his dedication, putting legal expertise into the hands of those often bereft of representation.
Governor Hobbs signaled her confidence in Doughty's future contributions to the judiciary. "He has further proven himself to be a leader and a highly capable attorney. I am proud to appoint him to the Coconino County Superior Court, where his compassion, knowledge, and experience will continue to benefit the people of Arizona for years to come," she said as per the Office of the Governor website.
