Animal welfare has been thrust into the local spotlight after the discovery of three severely malnourished and dehydrated puppies in Greensburg. According to a report by CBS News Pittsburgh, the puppies were found abandoned along the Five Star Trail yesterday, igniting an investigation by the Ninth Life Rescue Center.
In a Facebook post, as cited by CBS News Pittsburgh, the Ninth Life Rescue Center urged the community for clues, "We are desperately seeking information regarding where they came from and who dumped them. Did you see someone on the trail carrying a box? Did your neighbors have puppies on Wednesday but not on Thursday? Call us." Scant leads hamper the determined search for answers, but the shelter remains hopeful that members of the public may provide vital information about the dogs’ former custodians.
The condition of the puppies suggests they suffered considerable neglect. They have visible puncture wounds, broken teeth, and such a lack of body fat that their bones are discernible through their skin.
An individual on the Five Star Trail first discovered the puppies in a moving box, initiating their rescue. The quick intervention by Hoffman Kennels played a crucial part, as the dogs' odds of surviving the ongoing heatwave outdoors were slim. Now under the care of Ninth Life Rescue Center, the puppies are gradually being nursed back to health with regular feedings and water, alongside the veterinarian's watchful care, according to Audacy.
A cash reward has been announced for anyone who can provide information that leads to the identification of the person or persons responsible for this act.
