Gwinnett County will open the new Hooper-Renwick Themed Library on Monday next week at 56 Neal Blvd., transforming the former Hooper-Renwick School—the only public high school for Black students in the area—into a 27,327-square-foot library and community space. The project was funded through the SPLOST program with additional support from the City of Lawrenceville.

According to the Gwinnett County release, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will feature remarks from Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson, District 3 Commissioner Jasper Watkins III, and Gwinnett County Sheriff Keybo Taylor, an alumnus of the original school. Other speakers will include library officials and Lawrenceville city leaders. Deb Tuff, the county’s media relations strategist, will emcee the event.

The project involved collaboration between the county, the city, and the Hooper-Renwick Legacy Preservation Committee. Exhibits in the library will include historical stories and memorabilia from the former school. The new facility is more than twice the size of the original building and includes space for both library services and community programs. The City of Lawrenceville contributed infrastructure such as land, sidewalks, and lighting to support the library.
