Residents and businesses in parts of Hanalei should mark their calendars for June 18. That Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the tap will run dry due to a water service shutdown. According to the Department of Water, the interruption is necessary for the replacement of aging water main infrastructure, aiming to satisfy current water system standards—which includes upgrading for fire flow requirements.
With Weke Road, from Mālolo Road to its northern terminus, and Kūhiō Highway, stretching from Mālolo Road to the vicinity of the Waikoko hairpin turn, will all be without service. Adding to the list, ʻAmaʻama Road, ʻAnae Road, Heʻe Road, and Kumu Road also face the shut-off. Advising customers located in the no-water zone, the Department of Water suggests storing water for use during these hours. Businesses are being prompted to plan accordingly prior to and during the shutdown.
If your water heater needs steady pressure to work, be careful during the service break so it doesn't empty out. To help, the Department of Water is setting up water buffalo tanks for basic water needs. You can find them near the Waioli Park soccer field off Kūhiō Highway and by Waioli Beach Park off ʻAmaʻama Road. Bring your own containers to fill up.
"Store enough water to meet your needs during the shutdown," the Department of Water stresses, as stated on their official notice. They also suggest notifying family, friends, tenants, and neighbors—anyone who might be affected by the scheduled water disruption.
