Hanalei residents, brace yourselves for a temporary water service interruption. Scheduled for Wednesday, the Department of Water (DOW) is planning a shutdown from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to work on upgrading the area’s water infrastructure.

The shutdown will affect several areas, including portions of Weke Road, Kūhiō Highway in the proximity of the hairpin turn towards Waikoko, and customers located on ʻAmaʻama Road, ʻAnae Road, Heʻe Road, and Kumu Road. For motorists, the intersection of Kūhiō Highway with ʻAnae Road will close to through traffic from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Alternating one-lane traffic will still flow on Kūhiō Highway during work hours.

In anticipation of the water service interruption, the DOW advises residents to store sufficient water to last the duration of the shutdown. They also suggest notifying family, friends, tenants, and neighbors about the water service shutdown and ensuring that water heaters do not drain during this period. Area businesses are advised to prepare for the disruption as well.

To help meet essential water needs during the outage, the DOW will provide water buffaloes for the public. These watering stations will be stationed at the Waiʻoli Park soccer fields off Kūhiō Highway and Waiʻoli Beach Park off ʻAmaʻama Road. Residents will need to bring their own containers for storage.
