As Harper Woods prepares for a weekend of rising temperatures predicted to reach into the 90s, a spree of air conditioner thefts is leaving residents in heat and frustration. WXYZ News reports that approximately five air conditioning units were stolen over three weeks, impacting several homeowners like John McTaggart, whose new unit disappeared from the side of his house around 3 a.m. on June 4. "My neighbor actually texted me, 'Didn't you guys just get a new air conditioning unit?' And I wrote her back, texted her back, 'yeah.' And she said, 'Well, it's gone.' I'm like you gotta be kidding me," McTaggart told WXYZ News.
Similarly, the Harper Woods Police Department, in a statement reported by Audacy, advises that thieves are targeting corner houses more frequently—likely due to easier access—and conduct their operations late at night or in the early morning hours. They disconnect the power to the units, cut the refrigerant lines, and then remove the A/C condenser units. An officer told McTaggart that the suspects seem to be a "pretty well-organized outfit because they seem to know how to remove it both efficiently and quickly without any noise," as noted by WXYZ News.
Across the affected areas, police departments are working together to investigate these thefts. FOX 2 Detroit highlights that most incidents have taken place overnight and that the stolen units are believed to be sold on the streets. A warning has been issued to residents, urging them to lock their junction boxes, which hold the A/C unit’s condenser fuse, as a preventative measure. This advice is echoed by victim Tim Bolton, who experienced a theft less than half a mile from McTaggart's property and now recommends adding security cages over units.
The financial strain on the victims is considerable. McTaggart remarked to WXYZ News, "It's $4,500 for the initial unit, and the replacement will probably be about $5,000." In light of these events, local law enforcement agencies are asking the community to remain vigilant and monitor for suspicious vehicles and individuals, especially after midnight. Anyone with information regarding the A/C thefts is urged to contact the Harper Woods Police Department at 313-343-2530 or Crime Stoppers at 800-SPEAK-UP, ensuring that they can aid in apprehending those responsible for the thievery that has disrupted the onset of summer for many.
