Officials on Hawai‘i Island are reporting a slight decrease in DUI arrests this year. According to the Hawaii Police Department, police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence between last Monday through Sunday. A police notification indicates a downward trend, with 411 DUI arrests recorded so far in 2025, compared to 423 during the same period last year—a 1.99% decline.

Despite this marginal decrease, Hawai‘i Island has experienced an increase in traffic incidents, with major crashes rising to 449 compared to 443 during the same period last year—a 1.35% increase. While this rise is not necessarily linked to impaired driving, it remains a point of concern for local safety officials. However, there is a positive development: the number of fatal crashes has decreased. So far this year, there have been 12 fatal crashes resulting in 13 deaths, down from 15 fatal crashes and 17 deaths last year—marking a 20% and 23.52% decrease, respectively.

The persistent challenge of DUI incidents and traffic safety remains at the forefront for Hawai‘i law enforcement as they continue to set up DUI roadblocks and patrol the island.
