The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina, has issued a heat advisory warning of scorching heat with index values reaching as high as 108 degrees. According to the advisory, the affected areas include Cabarrus, Davie, Iredell, Mecklenburg, Rowan, and Union Counties. The advisory is set to remain in effect from 2 PM this afternoon until 8 PM EDT this evening.
The NWS cautions that high temperatures coupled with elevated humidity may prompt heat illnesses. It advises individuals to schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. "Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1," the NWS urges. Furthermore, the NWS recommends drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room, and checking up on relatives and neighbors to potentially reduce risk during this blistering heatwave.
Alongside the heat advisory, there is also ongoing concern of thunderstorms through the next week. The current forecast indicates a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 pm today, with a sunny and hot day reaching a high near 96 degrees. Temperatures tonight are expected to drop to a low around 73 with a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms before 11 pm.
The Hazardous Weather Outlook provided by the National Weather Service suggests that "Strong to severe storms will develop again this afternoon and evening. Any severe storm that develops will have the potential to produce damaging wind gusts." In addition to wind damage, isolated brief large hail is also within the realm of possibilities. The pattern is expected to persist with severe storms likely redeveloping Friday afternoon and evening, heralding in a week that will continue to test the mettle of both man and infrastructure under use.
