The Medical Examiner's Office in Maricopa County has officially determined that environmental heat exposure was the cause of death for Hannah Moody, a 31-year-old woman whose body was discovered after she went hiking in Scottsdale's Gateway Trailhead of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. According to a report by FOX 10 Phoenix, the findings released late last month categorized the death as an accidental result of the harsh desert temperatures.
Moody, last seen alive on May 21 as she set out to hike toward Tom's Thumb, was found the following day merely 600 yards from the trailhead parking lot. Despite the proximity to the beginning of her journey, the Arizona heat proved to quickly become a deadly opponent in her trek. Scottsdale Police indicated that there were no signs of foul play, as noted by 12 News.
In the wake of the tragic accident, Moody's community gathered to honor her memory. On what would have been her 32nd birthday, friends and family conducted a sunrise hike at the same preserve where she had passed away. Maricopa County reported over 600 such deaths in the year 2024 alone. Practical safety tips for hiking in such conditions can be found on various local websites, as per 12News.
