Zoo Knoxville is reaching out to the community, inviting input on the naming of their latest wildlife additions – two red wolf pups and two bat-eared fox kits. As reported by WVLT, the naming process starts with public submission of name ideas via the zoo's website, social media channels, or directly on-site. Enthusiastic guests can visit the zoo to submit their favorite names from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 28 and even score a special sticker for their efforts.
These pups and kits are not just adorable additions; their existence carries weight for conservation efforts. According to WATE, the six red wolf pups born in April at Zoo Knoxville are part of the most endangered wolf species in the world. An effort that seemingly represents a beacon of hope for the endangered species, a month following the red wolves, the zoo witnessed the birth of six bat-eared fox kits, animals crucial to the biodiversity of their native habitats.
Starting on July 4, Zoo Knoxville will take the myriad names suggested by the public and whittle them down to a top five for each animal, as detailed by WBIR. Once the finalists are chosen, the community will again come into play, voting on their top picks from this selection until July 10.
July 11 marks the day when these pups and kits will be bestowed with their new monikers, the culmination of nearly a two-week-long process that sees the community engagement at the heart. To cast your vote or submit a name, officials are directing the public to use the official link provided by the zoo. Those who choose to contribute their suggestions in person on June 28 will have the chance to leave with a small token of the zoo's appreciation, a memento in the form of a sticker, while supplies last.
