After dedicating over four decades to public service in Hennepin County, County Administrator David Hough has made the announcement of his retirement, set for July 31, 2025. Hough plans to transition into an advisory role starting August 1, where he will continue to be involved in special projects and advising capacities. This significant decision marks the end of an era in Hough's career, who has held the position since 2013. Before becoming the County Administrator, Hough's journey with the county began in the County Attorney's Office, where his roles varied from Managing Attorney of the Civil Division to serving as the Attorney to the County Board.
The move of such a long-term figure in Hennepin's administration plays a significant role in the narrative of the county's management, even as Hough steps into an advisory position. "After more than 40 years here, this was not an easy decision, but I am beyond proud of our accomplishments and the significant difference we’ve made in people’s lives," Hough stated, expressing his pride in the legacy he leaves behind and his ongoing commitment to the county's residents and employees, as per a bulletin on the Hennepin County website.
To find a successor who fits the shoes of such a pivotal figure will be of utmost importance to the county board. Hennepin County Board Chair Irene Fernando praised Hough for his "innovative, steadfast, and unwavering leadership," recognizing his role in steering the county through tough times with both vision and compassion. "We are incredibly appreciative for his service over the last four decades, as well as his continued contribution to Hennepin County’s mission through phased retirement," Fernando said. The board intends to engage in a process over the coming weeks to find a new County Administrator, ensuring a smooth transition into a future marked by dedication to the values and residents of the county.
