The Hickory community is in mourning following the unexpected loss of a young firefighter. In a statement obtained by Hickorync.gov, Fire Chief Matt Hutchinson conveyed the heart-wrenching news, "Yesterday we lost one of our own, Hickory Firefighter Jake Bridges, while on duty." Hutchinson added that collaborations with state agencies are underway to understand the full scope of this sorrowful event.
According to the fire department, firefighters responded to a call for a structure fire early yesterday morning. Having cleared the scene after the fire was subdued around 4:52 a.m., during preparations to restore their equipment, Firefighter Jake Bridges collapsed around 5:08 a.m., soon after returning to the station. Despite the rapid response and exhaustive efforts by his colleagues and medical staff, Jake's life slipped away in the grasp of a sudden medical emergency.
Jake Bridges had taken to the profession with fervor and dedication uncommon for his youthful age. At just 20 years old, after graduating from the Gaston College Fire Academy in 2022, Bridges joined the Hickory Fire Department in June 2023. In his time with the department, he was a certified Level II Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), serving his community with passion and commitment.
The grief of this loss echoes throughout the Hickory Fire Department. While awaiting further details surrounding Jake’s passing, the community essence has been summarized in an outpouring of support for Jake’s family, friends, and colleagues. Having worn their mourning hearts on their sleeves, the fire department expresses gratitude to the public and all aiding agencies for their solidarity during this tremendously challenging period.
