The observation period for this heritage month, created by Congress back in 1978, has evolved from a 10-day window to a month-long commemoration as of 1992, acknowledging the extensive influence of Asian-Pacific Americans in a myriad of fields, from the arts to government.
Home to a diverse Asian-Pacific American population that stems from regions such as Cambodia, China, India, and multiple other countries, Hillsborough County took this time to reflect on the achievements and cultural richness this community brings – Mariben Andersen, chair of the Tampa Mayor's Asian American Pacific Islander Council, expressed her gratitude at the event, according to the official county website. "As our forefathers before us, the first Filipinos that came as part of an exhibition of the trade center, the first Chinese who helped build the railroad in the great west, we want to remember and celebrate them because without them, we would not be here," she said in a statement that echoes the community's deep-rooted connection to their historical legacy.
During the month, various voices from within the Asian American Pacific Islander community in Hillsborough County came forward to express their thanks and share their stories emphasizing the critical role of recognition in building cross-cultural connections and enhancing the region's cultural fabric.
