A traffic crash at Cortez Boulevard and Kettering Road in Brooksville sent three patients to trauma centers Thursday, with one flown out by helicopter and two others driven by ground ambulance. Hernando County Fire Rescue responded to the scene just after 11 a.m., and the crash caused delays in the area until crews could clear it.
According to Hernando County Fire Rescue, one patient was flown by Med-Trans Florida to a trauma center while two other patients were transported by ground to a trauma center as well. Med-Trans Florida is a frequent air ambulance partner for Hernando County Fire Rescue, regularly dispatched for critical trauma evacuations across the county, per Med-Trans Florida's own Facebook page.
The intersection sits near Ridge Manor in eastern Hernando County, about 400 feet west of an elevated bridge that carries the Withlacoochee State Trail over the highway, according to Florida Department of Transportation District 7 studies. It is not the first time this stretch of road has drawn emergency crews. In January 2024, a driver lost control of a truck and crashed into the median near the same intersection, touching off a multi-vehicle law enforcement response and a subsequent fatal collision nearby, as reported by WTSP.
A Corridor With a Documented History
State engineers have flagged this section of Cortez Boulevard before. A Florida Department of Transportation engineering study found that the stretch of State Road 50 running from east of Bronson Boulevard to west of Kettering Road has historically recorded crash rates higher than the statewide average. The Florida Department of Transportation completed a major widening project through this same stretch in July 2023, expanding Cortez Boulevard from four to six lanes between Bronson Boulevard and US 98/US 301 in an effort to handle the corridor's growing traffic volume.
Despite that expansion, severe crashes have kept happening. In March, a multi-patient collision near Dorsey Smith Road on Cortez Boulevard left Hernando County Fire Rescue treating several victims and transporting two patients to a trauma center in serious condition. Two prior Hoodline reports this year documented other fatal incidents on the same road: a fatal midday crash at Lockhart Road in June that required a helicopter landing zone, and a fatal pedestrian strike near Deltona Boulevard later that month that shut down lanes and drew a Florida Highway Patrol investigation.
Regional Trauma Response Keeps Getting Tested
Air-ground coordination between Hernando County Fire Rescue and Med-Trans Florida is not unusual for serious crashes in this part of the county. In June, the two agencies executed another coordinated helicopter airlift in Brooksville after a multi-vehicle crash at US-41 and Whitman Road left a rider needing urgent transport to a regional pediatric trauma center, according to a report shared by Central Florida Scanner on Facebook. Hernando County crews typically transport the most severe trauma patients to regional centers such as Tampa General Hospital.
Local emergency capacity did expand recently: HCA Florida Oak Hill Hospital completed a $15.2 million freestanding emergency room in Spring Hill in June, equipped with a dedicated trauma bay, per the Florida Hospital News and Healthcare Report. Oak Hill Hospital remains the county's largest facility, operating 350 acute-care beds in Brooksville.
The pattern of severe wrecks on Cortez Boulevard reflects a broader problem across Hernando County. The county recorded 380 hit-and-run crashes resulting in 111 injuries and two fatalities during the first eight months of 2025, according to Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles data cited by the Reyes Firm. Statewide, Florida logged 366,300 total motor vehicle crashes in 2025, causing 157,636 injury crashes and 2,930 traffic fatalities, based on state crash dashboard data compiled by Swope, Rodante P.A.
What triggered Thursday's collision at Cortez Boulevard and Kettering Road has not been disclosed, and it remains unclear whether any citations or charges will follow. The current condition of the three patients transported to trauma centers has also not been released.
