In a disturbing case emerging from Houston County, Georgia, a man has been handed a 65-year prison sentence for the sexual abuse and exploitation of two nine-year-old children. Robert Dean Garza Jr., 46, will spend the next several decades behind bars following a jury's verdict on multiple charges that include aggravated child molestation and sexual exploitation of children, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The case, which first came to light during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, has now concluded with Garza's sentencing. The victims were living nightmarishly close to the abuser, as Garza was both a neighbor and a trusted friend of their parents. According to evidence presented at trial, it was under the guise of this friendship that Garza committed the "heinous acts" in secrecy, taking advantage of the vulnerability and trust of the young victims, who reportedly received phones from Garza to share child pornography—a fact they later disclosed to authorities. As per details obtained by WGXA News, the children's outcry arose after a year and a half when one confided in a friend, leading to the eventual reporting of the abuse.
Garza's trial featured testimonies from many in his community who had previously seen him in a favorable light, per information shared by Assistant District Attorney Justin Duane. "The defendant was a well-liked man in his community with many friends who testified as character witnesses on his behalf during the trial. He was a wolf in sheep's clothing," said Duane. This sentiment was echoed by District Attorney Eric Z. Edwards, who in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, characterized Garza as a "predator" who masked his true nature behind a facade of friendship and decency, only to bring "unthinkable harm" to the young girls.
Thanks to the bravery of a young friend of one of the victims, authorities were alerted, and an investigation, spearheaded by Sergeant Adrienne Hilton of the Houston County Sheriff's Office Juvenile Division, was launched, eventually resulting in Garza's arrest. The forensic examination of Garza's phone by Lieutenant Darin Meadows, a digital forensics expert, solidified the charges against him by uncovering incriminating evidence. District Attorney Eric Edwards lauded the actions of all involved, particularly noting the young voices that catalyzed justice. He said the defendant will never be able to hurt another child again, WGXA News reported.
Garza will serve the first 25 years of his sentence without parole, followed by life on probation.
