A suspect has been taken into custody in connection with a traffic incident that resulted in injuries to a Houston Police Department officer as well as another individual. The collision occurred in the early hours on the service road of State Highway 290, around the 13000 block of Northwest Freeway.
The man apprehended, identified as Eric Yovanni Ventura, 27, faces charges of aggravated assault against a public servant and intoxicated assault with serious bodily injury, as reported by the City of Houston. These charges have been filed in the 482nd State District Court. Ventura, currently hospitalized, does not have a booking photo available for release at this time.
Details from the Houston Police Department Vehicular Crimes Division, provided by Sergeant L. Ross and Officer C. Nguyen, outlined the events leading up to the crash. An HPD sergeant in a black Ford Explorer had pulled over the driver of an 18-wheeler and was seated in his vehicle when a black Ford Fusion, operated by Ventura, failed to rightfully control its speed, ramming into the Explorer. The impact pushed it into the rear of the parked 18-wheeler, hitting both the trailer and its driver.
Emergency responders had to extricate the trapped HPD sergeant from his mangled patrol vehicle, and he was transported to a local hospital along with the drivers of the 18-wheeler and the Fusion, all sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. According to the report, Ventura was found to be intoxicated and was arrested and sustainably charged for his involvement in the crash.
