Authorities have recently taken into custody an individual in connection with a shooting incident that claimed the life of an 18-year-old and left another teen injured. Zion Armon Mitchell, also 18, faces charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following the events at 5410 North Braeswood Boulevard on May 24, as reported by the City of Houston News.
Kenneth Leaks, identified as the deceased victim, was fatally shot during what witnesses described as a meeting for a transaction in the apartment complex parking lot. Another 17-year-old male was also hit by gunfire, sustaining injuries reported to not be life-threatening. The Houston Police Department (HPD) has elaborated that officers arrived at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital following the admission of the wounded individual, who was privately transported there after the confrontation. Attempts to quickly apprehend those responsible promptly followed, with the HPD Homicide Division leading the investigation.
According to the HPD, "The victim was inside a vehicle when he was approached by several black males. During the exchange, one suspect retrieved a firearm and shot at Mr. Leaks, striking him at least one time," as noted by the City of Houston News. These details painted a scenario of what began as a routine meet-up escalating swiftly into an act of violence.
Focused efforts by the HPD Southeast Patrol Division’s Crime Suppression Team led to Mitchell's arrest on Monday. He was then booked into the Harris County Jail, thus formally introducing him into the legal process.
