In light of the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, a group of 1,500 Americans, including Houston natives Zachary Shnol and Sophie Sorkin, have been evacuated from the region. Shnol, who was participating in a Birthright Israel trip, experienced the harsh reality of the conflict firsthand, taking shelter as missile strikes commenced. "After, you know, being in a bomb shelter, hearing the bombs, the sirens, the building is shaking and everything, like, there were moments that we questioned like, ‘Is this our last moment here?’" Shnol recounted in a chilling testimony to FOX26 Houston.
The harrowing experience was not limited to Shnol; many young Americans found themselves caught in the midst of danger. Sophie Sorkin and her volunteer group were also among those who spent tense nights frequently running to and from shelters as the conflict intensified. Sorkin's routine of seeking refuge was a stark contrast to the volunteer work that brought her to Israel. According to a Click2Houston interview with her mother, Shelly Sorkin, "Some nights it was two times a night and sometimes it was five times a night."
Both groups were eventually evacuated to Cyprus aboard the Mano Maritime cruise ship Crown Iris, departing from Ashdod, Israel. Their journey did not end without incident, as Shnol detailed an alarm that sounded on their way to the port, compelling everyone to take cover- a moment that he described as pivotal. The evacuees were part of a larger contingent of Jewish Americans connected with the Birthright Israel and Chabad's CITIC Jewish movement, which had their trips cut short due to the imminent danger.
Upon reaching safety, these young adults, including Shnol, have shared a new perspective on life. "I think every day that we get is a blessing," Shnol expressed, relieved to have survived the ordeal, as noted by FOX26 Houston. He and others have now safely returned to the United States, carrying with them not only their harrowing experiences but a profound appreciation for every moment of peace.
