Big news for Howard County and the greater Baltimore area as local officials put the region on display for a group of international delegates, showcasing its growing economic muscle. Howard County Executive Calvin Ball, alongside the Baltimore Metropolitan Council, hosted representatives from 12 countries in an effort to solidify Baltimore's position as a prime destination for international business ventures. According to Howard County's official news, the area's strategic positioning, with access to the Port of Baltimore and BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, sets up Howard County as a key player in significant economic development.
Baltimore's digital and physical infrastructure appears to be gaining momentum recently. In the last year, the region saw a hefty $4.4 billion in economic activity, with big names like Under Armor solidifying its place as a sports innovation leader through a $1.3 billion commitment. There's more, as the recent acquisition of Protenus by Bluesight, for a cool $50 million, demonstrates a clear foothold in fields like risk management, IT, and AI-driven healthcare. It's not all about big players, though. Bora Pharmaceuticals, the rebranded Emergent BioSolutions, has opened an 87,000-square-foot sterile manufacturing facility, aiming to broaden the industry landscape.
The region's growth doesn't stop there. Tradepoint Atlantic, celebrated for its multi-billion-dollar Sparrows Point project, announced a $1 billion expansion to boost the Port of Baltimore's container capacity by a staggering 70%. This expansion includes plans for a new office and industrial park named "Tradepoint at Savage Crossing." Marc Salotti of Tradepoint Atlantic told Howard County's news outlet, "The redevelopment of historic commercial corridors promises to bring new jobs as we work to strengthen and diversify our local and regional economies."
To further incentivize growth, Howard County has debuted the Eastern Howard County Enterprise Zone. A program offering tax perks to businesses investing in their properties or increasing employment. This zone covers over 2,300 acres along a prime commercial corridor. The county's global leadership ambitions in areas such as cybersecurity, technology, healthcare, and innovation are further bolstered by the introduction of its Howard Cyber accelerator program.
