At the recently held Paris Air Show, an important announcement was made concerning the economic growth of Tennessee. Howmet Aerospace Inc., a key player in the aerospace sector, stated its intention to expand its operations in Morristown, Tennessee. This decision is poised to bring an additional 217 jobs to the area, supplementing the 50 roles announced last July, as confirmed by a statement released by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD).
Governor Bill Lee, alongside TNECD Commissioner Stuart C. McWhorter, expressed enthusiasm about the economic promise embodied by these new positions. "The state with the workforce will win the future, and I am proud to announce hundreds of new, high-quality jobs for Tennesseans across Hamblen County," Governor Lee stated. The strategic expansion by Howmet Aerospace underscores the value of investment in the local workforce. And how these factors fit into Tennessee's broader economic aspirations.
Howmet Aerospace, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, manufactures critical components for jet engines and turbines as well as aerospace structures and forged aluminum wheels targeted at the aerospace and transportation industries. Currently employing over 1,000 people in Hamblen County, with this move, they continue to be one of the region's major employers. Merrick Murphy, president of engine products at Howmet Aerospace, highlighted the significance of the Morristown operations in engineering advancements for propulsion systems. He stated, "We couldn't be more excited to continue to grow in East Tennessee with the assistance of our tremendous state, local and regional partners."
The mission of TNECD is to propel economic growth by fostering job creation and community development, as described on their official website. With this expansion, not only does Howmet Aerospace fortify its presence in Tennessee, but it also complements the state's extensive efforts at enhancing a business-friendly environment. By facilitating both new corporate investments and the expansion of existing businesses, TNECD contributes significantly to the state's competitive edge in the national and global economy.
The bolstered job market in Morristown reflects the collaborative spirit between Howmet Aerospace and its various partners, including the state legislature and groups like the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), as acknowledged by Commissioner McWhorter. "Today’s announcement underscores how vital partnerships are to the economic success of our state and our local communities," he affirmed. This network of partnerships further extends to the city and county levels, demonstrating a unified commitment to driving economic success in the region.
