Yesterday morning, an unusual scene unfolded at the Portland Heliport, where Portland Police and Fire units coordinated an elevated rescue of a trespassing suspect. According to Portland Police, officers were dispatched to 33 Northwest Davis Street after receiving reports of a man unlawfully on the rooftop of a building on the heliport premises.

On arrival, responding officers engaged with the man, who was found lying on the roof adjoining the helicopter platform. Efforts to establish communication and persuade him to descend failed. His non-responsiveness and the precarious location delayed immediate detention for fear of a potential use-of-force situation in an elevated position. The individual did not appear to pose a danger to himself or others, prompting a strategic reassessment of the situation.

Monitoring the man were police officers and building security, who decided that additional support was required for a safe resolution. Subsequently, assistance came from Portland Fire & Rescue, who arrived with an Aerial Platform truck equipped with a rescue bucket. This bucket became the vehicle from which, at 12:05 p.m., two police officers and a fire crew successfully retrieved the man.

Further investigation revealed the suspect to be highly intoxicated on controlled substances, leading to his transport to a hospital on a detox hold. "Officers determined that the man was highly intoxicated on controlled substances," said a Portland Police statement. With no physical injuries reported, the man, identified as Aron T. Wiprud, 37, was later criminally cited for Burglary in the Second Degree and Criminal Mischief in the First Degree.
