An investigation is underway following a deadly officer-involved shooting in Cookeville. As reported by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the incident occurred late Sunday evening when local authorities attempted to serve a domestic assault warrant on Dawson McCracken.
According to the TBI's preliminary report, the confrontation occurred around 10:38 PM on N. Willow Avenue. Officers were confronted by McCracken, born July 15, 2002, who was armed with a handgun. An attempt to de-escalate the situation through negotiation was made, but tensions nonetheless escalated rapidly. McCracken reportedly drew his weapon, which led officers to discharge their firearms, striking him multiple times. McCracken received immediate aid from the officers present and was then transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The detailed process of piecing together the events that led to the shooting is being spearheaded by TBI agents, tasked with collecting evidence and conducting interviews. "Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration," the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said. It's also made clear that the TBI does not have a say regarding whether the officers' actions were justified; such decisions are to be made by the District Attorney General.
