It's been another banner year for the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. The Jacksonville-based institution swept the annual Applause Awards hosted at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando, racking up a series of wins and honors. Amongst the talents celebrated, Suliette Ortiz stood out as she clinched the title of Outstanding Lead Performer, securing her spot to compete in the prestigious National High School Musical Theatre Awards, notably known as the "Jimmy's." This achievement heralds Ortiz's portrayal of Diana in "Next to Normal," an emotionally charged performance that resonated with the audience and judges alike, according to the news release from Duval County Public Schools.
Closely following Ortiz's lead, Douglas Anderson Theatre had more students to boast about. Sophomore Alayna Martus snagged the Female 1st Runner-Up position for her role as Natalie, also in "Next to Normal,” while freshman Josef Wright was named Male 1st Runner-Up for "Hadestown," his portrayal of the god Hermes was potent enough to also earn him the “Spirit of the Applause Awards,” as reported by Duval County Public Schools. The commendation comes with a $2,500 scholarship, a testament to his promising potential. Senior Miles Melanson was not far behind, being named a Top Four Finalist for his performance in "Hadestown."
Financial accolades were also abundant. Seven DA Theatre students received scholarships tallying $1,000 each for various categories, highlighting the breadth of talent fostered within the school's arts program. Extraordinary faculty guidance played a significant role, with five teachers receiving honors for their outstanding contributions to the winning productions. The DA pit Orchestra for "HADESTOWN" didn't go unnoticed either, winning Best Orchestra.
The night was rife with stars and solid performances. The casts of "Next to Normal" and "Hadestown" delivered a potent medley on the Walt Disney Stage, which was no small feat, considering the gravity of performing at such a celebrated venue. DA alum Emma Cate Davis, a former Jimmy nominee herself, returned to her roots to co-host the event with Broadway's Michael James Scott. This crossing of paths between current students and past graduates exemplifies the nurturing environment that DA provides, undoubtedly setting the stage for more success to unfurl.
As the excitement for the Jimmy Awards builds, Suliette Ortiz is now to prepare alongside 102 other national winners. Hosted by Josh Groban, the event is less a competition and more a celebration of young theatrical talent, where the participants will immerse themselves in masterclasses and Broadway culture. The Jimmy Awards spotlight the pinnacle of high school musical theatre, marking a pivotal moment for these young performers awaiting to put forth their talents on June 23 at the Minskoff Theatre.
