Florida International University has reached a milestone, announcing former Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez as its new leader, making her the first woman and FIU alumna to hold the presidency. Her selection by the Board of Trustees was unanimous and follows her term as the interim president. According to NBC Miami, Nuñez's initial focus will be on securing necessary state funding to aid FIU's continued rise in national rankings.

Nuñez, who has served Florida in various capacities for 15 years including as the state's 20th lieutenant governor, is not new to FIU, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science and international relations in 1994 and a master’s in public administration in 1994, and 1998 respectively. Her appointment didn't go without some dissent, however, as a small group of students protested her selection outside the ballroom where the announcement was made. In a statement obtained by WSVN, Nuñez expressed, “I think the most important priority is ensuring FIU is well represented in Tallahassee and Washington,” highlighting the importance of state funding for the university.

Nuñez's leadership comes at a crucial time as higher education is intensely scrutinized nationwide. During her interview with the Board of Trustees, she touched on various sensitive topics, including the implications for undocumented students and diversity on campus. She acknowledged the tough situations stating, "I can tell you that we have a responsibility to follow the law, so certainly that is a possibility but we'll have to monitor that situation, it's a delicate situation and I understand it," Jeanette Nuñez told NBC Miami, keeping the focus on compliance with the law while also recognizing the complexity of the issues at hand.

The presidential role indeed comes with hefty financial recognition as well; Nunez is slated to earn an annual salary of $925,000 as per the contract's terms. The decision by the Board of Trustees is pending final confirmation by the Florida Board of Governors, which is expected to happen on June 18, according to details provided by WSVN
