Jeff Holmes has been named the interim commissioner for the Tennessee Department of General Services (DGS), taking the reins from Matt Van Epps, who resigned on Tuesday to embark on a new venture. Governor Bill Lee announced the leadership change effective today. Van Epps, who began serving as commissioner of DGS in September 2024, has been recognized for streamlining the operations, even earning the department a Top Workplaces honor. Before his role as commissioner, Van Epps held several positions in the Lee administration and maintains his involvement in the Tennessee Army National Guard.

Stepping up to fill Van Epps' shoes, Holmes brings to the table over four decades of service in the Tennessee National Guard. His career highlights include stints as Tennessee’s 76th Adjutant General and Director of Planning and Programming at the Tennessee Board of Regents. According to Gov. Lee's statement, per the Governor's Office, "Jeff Holmes has a significant track record of serving Tennesians," praising his readiness to assume leadership of the DGS.

The departure of Van Epps was met with gratitude by Gov. Lee, who acknowledged his contributions not only in his capacity at the DGS but also to the state through his military service. "I deeply appreciate his leadership at the Department of General Services, and Maria and I wish Matt continued success and pray God’s blessings over him in the days ahead," Gov. Lee said, per the Governor's Office. Van Epps, a West Point graduate and U.S. Army veteran, has a history of dedicated service that extends beyond his professional duties, living in Nashville along with his wife and daughter.
