For those commuting via U.S. Route 54 in Jefferson City, a heads-up comes your way. Construction is marching forward, bringing shifts in traffic patterns as crews brace for the next phase of bridge work. The weather's whims enforced a brief delay, but according to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), starting tonight, the planned traffic switch is set to proceed if clouds permit, nudging motorists into a new dance of detours and patience.
The latest stretch of construction wheels into motion on the right lanes of the Stadium Boulevard overpass bridges and the eastbound Linden Drive overpass bridge. Transpiring over consecutive days, drivers are kindly requested by MoDOT to decelerate and exercise heightened caution; a terrain now mottled with hardhats and steel. Closures sealed during the first phase remain and now, two fresh ramps join the list of temporary no-go's--the eastbound U.S. Route 54 off-ramp to Madison Street, and the westbound companion leading to Stadium Boulevard.
While navigating this work zone, commuters will run into the familiar -- traffic delays that could extend for miles during the rhythm of rush hours and weekend wanderings. With an 11-foot width restriction in place and speed limits dipping to 35 mph, even the widest boats and RVs at 8-foot-6-inches should pass, though permits are a must for anything broader, as per MoDOT's Motor Carrier Services. The expectation is that these conditions will stretch their legs out until mid-October, though contractors have dangled the carrot of early completion incentives before builders.
The ask from MoDOT stretches beyond the usual safety protocols. The department pleads for the partnership of all motorists to buckle up, put phones down, respect traffic signs, and slow down and move over in work zones.
