Jefferson Parish is joining the growing list of municipalities acknowledging Juneteenth with alterations to its routine services. An official statement confirms that Jefferson Parish Government offices along with Head Start Centers, under the Jefferson Community Action Programs, will observe the holiday by closing tomorrow, June 20. However, residents can breathe easy knowing curbside garbage collection will march on, unaffected for those living in Unincorporated Jefferson Parish and the Town of Jean Lafitte. Furthermore, anyone looking to get rid of larger waste items can do so, as the Jefferson Parish Landfill plans to keep its gates open.
Those hoping to enjoy leisurely activities or government services may need to retool their plans. All Jefferson Parish libraries and JPAWS Adoption Centers are planning a pause, along with JPRD parks, programs and playgrounds—though there are exceptions for Lafreniere Park and Parc des Familles. This short break in service starts tomorrow, June 20, but normal operations are scheduled to resume promptly the following day, according to the Jefferson Parish official announcement.
Employment services via the East Bank American Job Center will experience a double dose of closures, starting on the holiday itself, yesterday, June 19, and extending through to Friday. Meanwhile, its counterpart on the West Bank only calls for a single day off on Friday. Both facilities anticipate a return to their usual schedules starting Monday, June 23. And for those relying on public transport, Jefferson Parish Transit reassures that it will maintain its typical rhythms on Friday, affording residents the mobility they've come to expect even during the observance of federal holidays.
