A Jennings man, George Gholston, age 33, entered a guilty plea to charges of second-degree murder and unlawful gun possession on Monday. Gholston accepted responsibility for the 2022 killing of 21-year-old Nicholas Taylor near the scenic 100 block stretch of the downtown St. Louis riverfront, as per the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office.
Details of the plea come just before a scheduled trial, whereby Gholston was condemned to two decades behind bars in the Missouri Department of Corrections. According to the office of the St. Louis Circuit Attorney, the incident, which occurred on October 26, 2022, unravelled following a dispute between the accused, the victim, and several others. After Taylor tried to leave the altercation, he was shot in the head at close range by an AR-style pistol wielded by Gholston.
Surveillance video obtained at the time of the crime depicted Gholston's vehicle fleeing posthaste immediately following Taylor's shooting. A key eyewitness, who had witnessed the crime, identified Gholston both visually and by his street moniker, "Terminator." The same individual's statement was consistent with previous interviews conducted by the police, and further supported by phone records that placed Gholston at the crime scene, tracking his movements thereafter.
St. Louis Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore weighed in on the case's resolution, stating, "George Gholston took a life in a brutal and senseless manner." Gore continued, "We thank the witness who bravely came forward to help us achieve justice despite the potential risk," as noted in the aforementioned statement by the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office. The damning evidence against Gholston, who could not legally own a firearm due to being a convicted felon, was bolstered by his prior criminal record including assault, robbery, burglary, and a federal firearms offense.
The prosecution, led by Chief of Homicide Tanja Engelhardt and Assistant Circuit Attorney Aradhana Polley, saw this plea as the conclusion of a grim chapter in the local legal history on the St. Louis riverfront.
