The Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) has cause to celebrate, as one of its own, Officer Sharrell Dykes, received the prestigious 2024-2025 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award from the American Legion Department of Tennessee. The honor comes in recognition of his outstanding bravery and commitment to service during the havoc wreaked by Hurricane Helene. The ceremony where Officer Dykes was honored took place earlier this month in Murfreesboro, as reported by the Johnson City official website.
Officer Dykes, nominated by the American Legion Kings Mountain Post 24, showcased the kind of valor that commands respect. It was on September 27 when he suggested to JCPD leadership to put a 5-ton military truck into use, a suggestion that was about to become a crucial lifeline. Dykes didn't just stop there; he took it upon himself to retrieve the truck and, along with a Sheriff’s Office employee, braved the flood to rescue eight deputies and a K9 trapped in the Embreeville area. Despite facing roads and bridges washed out by the flooding and even with water overflowing into the truck, Officer Dykes managed to securely bring everyone home, a testament to his courage under pressure.
"I'm honored to receive this award from the American Legion," Officer Dykes said. "I accept it on behalf of all the first responders who stepped up during Hurricane Helene. It was a true team effort, and I'm proud to serve alongside such dedicated men and women." These words, quoted on the city's official news release, reflect the humility and spirit of Dykes' service.
The commendation from the American Legion, a body consisting of roughly 155 local posts in Tennessee, is not given lightly. The recognition of Officer Dykes on a state level resonates with the ethos of JCPD, whose Chief Billy Church openly expressed pride in his officer's leadership during the disaster. "This award is a testament not just to his actions that day, but to who he is every day," Church commented, as the department rejoices in the well-deserved accolade for one of their finest.
Officer Dykes's story is a vivid account of the sacrifices first responders make daily and the extraordinary measures they take to ensure public safety. The JCPD's acknowledgement of his honor reinforces their dedication to service and protection, highlighting the significance of officer recognition in promoting exemplary conduct within law enforcement.
