The ceremony where Officer Dykes was honored took place earlier this month in Murfreesboro, as reported by the Johnson City official website.
Officer Dykes, nominated by the American Legion Kings Mountain Post 24, showcased the kind of valor that commands respect. It was on September 27 when he suggested to JCPD leadership to put a 5-ton military truck into use, a suggestion that was about to become a crucial lifeline. Dykes didn't just stop there; he took it upon himself to retrieve the truck and, along with a Sheriff’s Office employee, braved the flood to rescue eight deputies and a K9 trapped in the Embreeville area. Despite facing roads and bridges washed out by the flooding and even with water overflowing into the truck, Officer Dykes managed to securely bring everyone home, a testament to his courage under pressure.
"I'm honored to receive this award from the American Legion," Officer Dykes said. "I accept it on behalf of all the first responders who stepped up during Hurricane Helene. It was a true team effort, and I'm proud to serve alongside such dedicated men and women." These words, quoted on the city's official news release, reflect the humility and spirit of Dykes' service.
