After a three-month investigation into a string of car break-ins in Troup County, school resource officers helped lead to a breakthrough in the case. Three juveniles, ages 14 and 15, find themselves facing numerous charges for their alleged roles in a substantial spree of car burglaries. The Troup County Sheriff's Office arrested the suspects on Monday, crediting SROs with a pivotal tip that led to the breakthrough, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Spanning from March to June 1, the auto break-ins had initially involved unlocked vehicles but escalated to the smashing of windows on locked cars. It was a Ring doorbell video that captured a couple of the teens without masks, aiding in the identification process. The sheriff's office sent the footage to all school resource officers across Troup County. With a description of a vehicle suspected to be involved, SROs matched the vehicle to one of the teens, providing a clear direction for the deputies, despite having a big break, according to Lt. Stewart Smith who told FOX 5 Atlanta, "They kind of pointed us in the right direction because they know their students in their schools."
The initial tally of charges against the juveniles totaled 52 felonies, ranging from theft to entering an auto, and firearms charges. In a recent development, the City of Hogansville has levied an additional 84 felony counts following their own investigation into incidents within their jurisdiction. The information, obtained through WTVM News Leader 9, brings the grand total to 136 felony charges against the three juveniles.
While some stolen property has been recovered and investigators have made contact with the victims, the Troup County Sheriff highlighted the importance of vigilance among car owners, emphasizing that vehicles should always be locked and valuables never left unattended. The juveniles have made their first appearance in juvenile court, and the investigations are ongoing.
