Waimea residents were spared injury this past Thursday as Kaua‘i Fire Department units moved swiftly to extinguish a structure fire on Alawai Road. According to a county press release, the call came in after 6:15 p.m., and emergency personnel from the Waimea, Kalāheo, and Līhu‘e fire stations were immediately dispatched to tackle the blaze.
Despite arriving within a mere five minutes of the call, they were met with heavy smoke billowing from the first floor, reported the Kaua‘i Fire Department. The fast-acting teams, complemented by the Fire Prevention Bureau and the on-duty Battalion Chief, brought the fire under control, which no residents were harmed during the incident.
After the flames were subdued, the KFD Fire Prevention Bureau took charge of the scene to investigate the cause of the fire. Firefighters were able to clear the area by roughly 7:30 p.m., demonstrating efficiency in an otherwise chaotic situation.
Even though the structural integrity stood strong under the stress of the flames, damages to the house and the possessions within were significant. Estimated losses are pegged at $397,000, as noted in the press release. The circumstances leading to the fire's ignition are still being pieced together by local authorities.
