Kaua‘i residents in need of disposing of scrap metals and appliances will have to hold off or find alternate locations as several drop-off sites have shuttered temporarily. According to an announcement from the County of Kaua‘i's Solid Waste Division, the Hanalei Refuse Transfer Station, Hanapēpē Refuse Transfer Station, and Kekaha Landfill are no longer accepting these items from last Thursday, due to staffing issues with the contractor tasked with overseeing the recycling efforts.

Those looking to discard such materials will now have to bring them to the Puhi Metals Recycling Center, despite the convenience this might impose for some. Open from Monday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Puhi Metals Recycling Center is situated at 3951 Puhi Road, Līhu‘e, providing a temporary solution until services can resume normally. Residents can call 808-245-6919 for further details about the center's capabilities and restrictions.

The county has acknowledged the disruption this causes and assures the public that they're working to resolve the issues as swiftly as possible. In the interim, the Solid Waste Division has asked for the community's patience and understanding. Locals in need of more information or updates on the situation are encouraged to contact the Solid Waste Division directly at 808-241-4841 or to check the updates posted on the county's website.
