Drivers in Kirkland should brace for a weekend of detours and delays as all lanes of northbound Interstate 405 will be closed for ongoing construction work. The closure, which stretches from Northeast 70th Street to Northeast 124th Street, began at 11:55 p.m. on Friday, June 27, and is scheduled to last until 4 a.m. earlier today, as reported by KING 5.
This disruption is part of the I-405/Northeast 85th Street Interchange and Inline Station Project. The northbound I-405 on- and off-ramps at Northeast 85th Street have also, been shutdown. KIRO 7 has detailed that commuters will be redirected off of northbound I-405 between NE 70th Place and NE 124th Street and that a signed detour is in place to guide the flow of traffic.
Local residents can expect the typical side effects of construction: noise, dust, and vibrations, as mentioned by KOMO News. The transportation department has made it clear that planning ahead for these delays is crucial for those navigating the area over the weekend.
With northbound travel significantly affected, WSDOT advises drivers to prepare for congestion throughout the weekend. Alternative routes may be required. The closure is part of the ongoing interchange project, which is intended to improve traffic flow and safety. During this phase, changes to roadway access are expected as construction progresses.
