The Metropolitan Police Department recently took into custody a man linked to a series of property destruction incidents, some of which officials are investigating as possible hate crimes. According to a statement released by MPD, 30-year-old Michael Isaiah Webb Jr. from Landover, MD, now faces charges of Destruction of Property and Defacing Private Property.

On June 2, police were called to Dupont Circle after reports came in of a suspect tearing down rainbow-colored cloth from light poles. The suspect managed to quickly flee the scene before the authorities arrived. Then, two days later, a similar incident occurred in which offensive language was graffitied onto private property at Maine Avenue, Southwest. Detectives moved to rapidly identify the suspect, working off video and photo evidence gathered from both scenes of the vandalism.

MPD officers who were familiar with these offences spotted Webb in Navy Yard on Sunday, June 8, and were able to make an arrest without incident. The detectives' investigation has led to the current charges against Webb, though the motivation behind the acts remains under scrutiny. The case could potentially bear the weight of a hate crime designation, though this has yet to be determined as the investigation continues.

Given the nature of the property that was targeted, the MPD has not ruled out the possibility that the acts were motivated by hate or bias. "The Special Liaison Branch is assisting with this investigation," according to the MPD's statement. This designation, if applied to the case, can significantly impact the charges and potential penalties Webb might face. Nevertheless, it's important to note that even if MPD classifies the incident as a hate crime, that does not guarantee that the prosecutors will to choose to prosecute it as such.
