The City of Las Cruces has officially announced its schedule for the upcoming Juneteenth holiday. On Thursday, June 19, in observance of this significant date, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, most City offices will be closed. The City of Las Cruces noted that while the majority of its branches will observe the closure, essential emergency services such as police and fire departments will operate as usual.
In a break from the norm, some services will continue to function despite the holiday. This includes all solid waste, commercial, and residential services that have been scheduled to operate on usual hours. Adhering to the everyday rhythm, the Foothills Landfill and Corralitos Landfill, along with the Amador Transfer Station, are all set to open with regular business hours. Furthermore, Roadrunner Transit bus and Dial-A-Ride services are prepared to run from early morning till late evening, ensuring that public transportation remains available for those who need to venture out.
For individuals looking to leverage the holiday for recreation, the City has provided a concise list of facilities with altered hours. The Meerscheidt Recreation Center is slated to be accessible to the public from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Additionally, the Regional Aquatic Center and the Las Cruces Natatorium will provide services, albeit with limited hours. Families and individuals aiming to cool off can visit the Laabs Outdoor Pool, which has two open swim sessions planned within the afternoon and early evening.
However, residents should take note of the various city establishments that will shutter their doors in honor of Juneteenth. These include the formidable City Hall, the hubs of cultural knowledge and engagement such as Thomas Branigan Memorial Library and all its branch libraries, not to mention all city museums. The senior programs and associated facilities will also pause to acknowledge this day of liberation, freedom, and cultural importance.
