Las Cruces Senior Programs is stepping up to address a grave issue that plagues our society's most seasoned citizens. They are hosting the Abuse in Later Life Awareness Health Fair this Friday, an initiative that aims to turn the tide against the often-overlooked problem of elder abuse. The event is set to take place on June 6 at the Munson Senior Center, located at 975 S. Mesquite St., revealing a concerted effort to educate and empower.
The health fair, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 6, is not just another event; it's free, and it's a hub for valuable information. Attendees can expect a range of community partners who will provide resources and guidance aimed at preventing the mistreatment of older adults. This fair arrives just in time for Elder Abuse Awareness Month, an annual observance dedicated to shining a spotlight on this pressing issue.
While the fair will likely be a beacon for those seeking knowledge on how to protect the elderly, it's worth noting that, due to the scale of the fair, certain Senior Recreation programs, like the activities and classes usually held at Munson, will be on a brief hiatus for the day. However, life, much like the Enhanced Fitness Class at 8 a.m. and the Line Dancing Class at 2 p.m., goes on. These two endeavors will honor their schedules, unaffected by the day's main event.
All the regular programming at Munson Center that is affected by the fair will swiftly return to normalcy come Monday, June 9, according to the City of Las Cruces. It is this small disruption for a greater cause, raising awareness and equipping residents to stand against elder abuse, that could mark the beginning of a larger conversation and, hopefully, bring about much-needed change within our community.
