Residents in northwest Harris County's Linnfield neighborhood are increasing security measures after enduring a spate of mailbox thefts. Surveillance videos circulating among the community depict a dark-colored truck that swoops in, allowing a passenger to hastily raid a cluster of mailboxes, stripping them of their contents in a matter of mere minutes. This criminal routine hit the same mailbox cluster two times last week, as reported by CW39.
Enraged and desperate, local resident Simon Salinas spoke with ABC13, sharing footage from a camera he installed specifically to catch the culprits. "I've been losing mail!" Salinas exclaimed, revealing how the thieves operate in the early hours. The most recent theft left the community's mailbox wide open, with disregarded mail littered around the scene.
The incidents have been reported to both the Harris County Sheriff's Department and the U.S. Postal Service; however, no charges have been filed thus far. Salinas, visibly frustrated by the lack of progress by local authorities, decided to publicize the thefts through media intervention, telling ABC13, "Then I called y'all. I said, 'Well, they're not doing anything. Maybe y'all can do something.'"
This series of thefts taps into larger concerns, considering a report from ABC13 this March that highlighted the disappearance of numerous USPS mailboxes, putting over 20,000 cluster mailboxes at risk. Beyond the violation of personal property, Salinas—a career mail carrier himself—worries about the potential danger to postal workers who may be targeted for their master keys. "That key's not worth your life," he told ABC13.
