Residents living along Columbus Avenue South can expect to see work crews and construction activity starting July 7, as CenterPoint Energy undertakes a substantial upgrade to its natural gas infrastructure. According to an announcement made by the company, construction will span from 48th Street East to 54th Street East, with the project anticipated to continue until the fall, potentially extending into spring 2026.
While the work is part of a multi-year plan to enhance system reliability and safety, disruptions will be inevitable. Authorized CenterPoint contractors will be manifest, identifiable by their company-issued ID cards, and residents are advised to request such identification before granting entry to their homes. Despite the intrusion, service line and meter work on individual properties are not a component of this phase, so homeowners can breathe easier knowing that their gas supply should remain uninterrupted.
The construction process will involve installing sections of high-diameter steel gas main, calling for temporary open trenches in the roadways. The new mains are promised to be harder due to their protective coatings. However, CenterPoint has acknowledged that the installation process will result in noise, vibration, and dust—side effects that residents along the avenue will have to cope with.
Following the heavy lifting of infrastructural replacement, restoration is on the agenda. Although specific timelines have been vague, CenterPoint has committed to repairing affected areas, with temporary measures in place to maintain liveability in between. For those curious about natural gas technology enhancements, resources have been made available online.
Traffic will be impacted as portions of Columbus Avenue South will see closures to accommodate construction needs. Detailed closure information will be communicated in due course, but access to homes will be preserved through the project's duration, and detours will be established. Residents with further questions are directed to contact CenterPoint Energy's Communication Specialist, Una O'Meara, by email at [email protected] or by phone at 612-542-6198.
