Early Wednesday morning, a shocking event unfolded in downtown Los Angeles when a man allegedly carjacked a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) truck. The incident took place in the vicinity of Spring and Temple streets, right by the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, CBS News Los Angeles reported. According to the LASD, two of their deputies were conducting official duties when the suspect approached. A physical altercation occurred before the suspect managed to take control of the vehicle, described as an all-purpose utility truck equipped with a boom lift, and drive away.
The deputies, one of whom was hoisted in the lift at the time, had to quickly jump out of the moving vehicle to avoid further harm. Fortunately, the officers did not sustain any injuries during the ordeal. The stolen truck was later found abandoned in Gardena, in the 14900 block of South Western Avenue, FOX LA details. Although deputies were relieved to find that no department-issued firearms or weapons were taken, four cell phones still remain unaccounted for.
Investigative efforts quickly led authorities to a residence on the 1700 block of West 150th street in the city of Gardena. It was there that detectives were able to gather evidence implicating 36-year-old Mark Arriola in the crime. The suspect was subsequently arrested during a traffic stop, and has been charged with carjacking, FOX LA notes. Despite the arrest, the LASD states that the investigation is ongoing as Arriola has since been released on bond.
Authorities continue to actively seek any additional information that may lead to further developments in the case. Police described the initial suspect as a Black male in his mid-20s, approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing around 180 pounds, with a shaved head, last seen wearing a black shirt and blue jeans. Those with information are encouraged to directly contact the LASD Major Crimes Bureau, or anonymously provide tips through L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers.
