The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is actively investigating a fatal shooting that occurred yesterday afternoon in the parking lot of the Copeland's restaurant on Jacksonville's Southside. A man in his late 30s was found with a gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to the hospital by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, where he was later pronounced dead. The incident led to a sizable law enforcement response, with over ten JSO vehicles at the scene and a perimeter sealed with crime scene tape, as reported by Action News Jax.

According to the JSO, the victim was present to meet someone, although it remains unclear what the meeting pertained to. In the aftermath of the shooting, which prompted a wide police presence around 2:30 p.m., three individuals were detained for questioning, with their connection to the incident still under investigation. As detailed by News4Jax, authorities are in search of a black or dark-colored four-door vehicle, possibly a Nissan, that was witnessed at the scene during the time of the shooting.

Furthermore, JSO mentioned that two individuals are cooperating with police as witnesses to what transpired. In response to the violence, Copeland's restaurant announced closure for the remainder of the day following the shooting. As for the community at large, police believe this was an isolated incident related to the individual the victim was scheduled to meet with, ensuring some measure of safety for those not involved. This information was made available through First Coast News.

The terrifying nature of the incident was also recounted by Yana Royter, an employee at a coffee shop nearby, who in an interview with News4Jax, "It all kind of happened so fast. I had only been here for 15 minutes, like it was the very start of my shift, and at first I was like, what’s going on? Then we were kind of nosy, and we went outside to go look, then we came back inside and locked the back door just in case, because we weren’t sure about what the situation was. But yeah, it was definitely really scary, and I’m really glad that they responded so quickly and ran back inside." JSO has urged anyone with information regarding the car or the incident to come forward and contact them at 904-630-0500 or email [email protected].
