A man in Burke County is the target of a manhunt after he allegedly tried to make off with several airplanes from a local airport, causing extensive damages in the process. The Burke County Sheriff's Office released information that the unsuccessful heist took place last Monday night at the Foothills Regional Airport. The suspect, described as a man in his 30s or 40s, caused "significant damage" to multiple planes, a costly spree estimated around $400,000, as reported by WBTV.
Deputies and the NC State Highway Patrol were alerted to the attempted theft following reports of a breaking and entering at the airport. Surveillance footage pegged the suspect driving a light-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee, donning light-colored pants, a dark shirt, dark boots and a dark baseball cap, with the addition of a small military-style backpack with MOLLE webbing, as detailed by QC News. Despite breaching the hangar and tampering with aircrafts, he didn't manage to take flight with any of the targeted planes.
The situation remains unresolved, with authorities continuing their search. The Burke County Sheriff's Office is urging anyone with pertinent information to come forward.
