Maricopa is stepping up its recreation game with a new Field House poised to become a hub for sports and community events. The groundbreaking ceremony this week brought city officials and community members together at the site of the future Field House located at Copper Sky, according to an article on the city's official website. Set for completion in late summer 2026, the project will revamp an old police substation into a 44,088-square-foot facility, including 33,235 square feet of spanking new construction.
Local residents can expect to see a significant enhancement to their recreational options. The indoor space will feature enough court space for 4 full-size basketball courts, 6 volleyball courts, or 12 pickleball courts. Also, a lounge and tournament hub spanning 1,680 square feet will offer a place for comfort and relaxation. In addition an assembly room and modern amenities like restrooms and staff offices are on the blueprint, ensuring the facility is equipped for a variety of gatherings and sports-related activities. Mayor Nancy Smith chimed in on the project's significance, stating, "When Copper Sky opened more than ten years ago, it was a major step in creating a sense of place for our residents. This new Field House builds on that foundation," the City of Maricopa announcement cited.
Although the construction start was described as a "quiet milestone," the real fanfare is expected to happen once the Field House opens its doors to the public. The City of Maricopa appears to be banking on the new facility to not only boost local recreation but also to attract tournaments and events that could have positive ripple effects on the community.
The Field House is a testament to Maricopa's commitment to fostering connections and enhancing quality of life through its public spaces. It builds on the legacy of Copper Sky, which has served as a cornerstone for the community's recreational life for over a decade. The expansion looks to welcome an even wider audience, from casual players to competitive athletes, drawing more people into the heart of Maricopa's community fabric. "We’re taking that same spirit and expanding it for an even larger group of Maricopans to enjoy," Mayor Smith told the City of Maricopa news release.
