Monsoon Awareness Week spans from June 8 to 14, a period dedicated to prepping locals with a slew of safety tips and information essential to combat the potentially hazardous conditions of high winds, dust storms, and flash flooding, which could suddenly swoop across the region between June and September.
George Burger, the City's Emergency Manager, emphasized in a statement to the City of Maricopa news page the importance of preparedness, not panic, citing that the city's rapid growth warrants new measures for the influx of residents who might be unfamiliar with the tempestuous nature of monsoon season, "Preparedness isn't about panic; it's about peace of mind. A little planning, knowing your flood risk, having an emergency kit, and staying alert. It can go a long way when seconds count."
Maricopa has been proactive in reducing flood risks before the monsoons hit, initiating major flood-control projects such as a $1.3 million federally funded box culvert beneath the Santa Rosa Wash, designed to improve drainage near Desert Sunrise High School and bolster safety on school routes during severe weather events, these projects also extend to creating new culverts, bridges, and retention basins throughout key waterways like Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Washes contributing to regional drainage improvements. They've primed their residents to check floodplain statuses via the FEMA National Flood Hazard Layer (NFHL) Viewer, to better understand their exposure to the threat of rising waters.
When it comes to day-to-day vigilance throughout the monsoon period, Maricopa officials urge residents to keep an eye on weather updates from the National Weather Service at weather.gov and air quality forecasts at azdeq.gov/forecasting, more tips include driving caution, particularly the lifesaving "Turn Around, Don’t Drown" mantra against navigating flooded roads, also if a dust storm hits while driving the protocol is to pull off the road, turn off your lights, and wait it out within the vehicle, not to mention taking serious heat precautions by limiting time spent outdoors during peak temperatures, and consistently hydrating, crucial for personal well-being and safety, as noted on the City of Maricopa website.
Enrollment in Maricopa's Community Alert Network at maricopa-az.gov/mcan furnishes locals with real-time alerts about flooding, severe weather, and other emergencies besides offering guidelines for putting together an emergency supply kit found on the city’s Emergency Management page.
