In a vibrant nod to Pride Month, the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is partnering with several LGBTQ+ organizations to offer a series of Pride Hikes across Massachusetts, according to a recent announcement from the agency. DCR is teaming up with PFLAG Cape Cod, the Stonewall Center at UMass Amherst, Queer Men of the Berkshires (Q-MoB), Out Metrowest, and Hingham Pride Project to provide safe, inclusive, and celebratory outings for the LGBTQ+ community.

These hikes are not just a fleeting June jubilee; DCR is set to continue these events beyond the Pride Month, with the intention to kick-start the series again in the coming months, as per their website. DCR Commissioner Brian Arrigo highlighted the endeavor, stating, "These Pride Hikes are opportunities for our LBGTQ+ friends and their loved ones to safely and peacefully come together and explore the beauty of our state parks." The celebration is marked by both recognition and exploration, providing LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies a chance to commune with the natural landscapes of Massachusetts.

A range of hikes are scheduled throughout the state, featuring various levels of difficulty and landscapes. For example, participants can join a 1.75-mile walk around Wompatuck State Park or opt for an evening Pride Sunset Walk at Wachusett Reservoir, which promises stunning twilight views and comes with glowsticks to illuminate the journey after dark. In Falmouth, a special Juneteenth Pride Hike will trace the path along the Quashnet River, honoring both Pride and the historical significance of Juneteenth. Full details for these events can be found on the DCR Programs and Events webpage.

The initiative has been met with enthusiasm from local LGBTQ+ advocacy groups. Michelle Weiser, President of the Hingham Pride Project, told Mass.gov, "Pride hikes provide a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQ+ individuals to connect with nature and build community." These hikes are more than just a trail through the woods, they are an opportunity to promote mental and physical well-being, while at the same time, celebrating diversity outside the straight lines of urban life.

Online registration is available—and in some cases required due to limited capacity—for hikes taking place across Massachusetts in June. These events are open to members of the LGBTQ+ community, their families, and allies. Participants are advised to wear sturdy shoes and bring outdoor essentials such as bug spray, sunscreen, and water. Wearing pride colors is welcome. Attendees may share their experiences on social media by tagging @MassDCR. The hikes will be held at various locations and dates throughout the month.
