As Massachusetts experiences high temperatures that feel close to 100 degrees, several beaches across the state have been closed to swimmers due to elevated bacteria levels. According to Boston 25 News, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health has closed access to 14 bodies of water, including beaches, lakes, and ponds.
Residents are encouraged to check the department's interactive beach water quality dashboard, which updates hourly from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., to stay informed about swimming conditions. Closures have affected popular spots such as Damon Pond Beach in Ashby and the main beach at Walden Pond—though the latter is closed for the season due to construction.
The water quality at these sites is tested weekly from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Elevated bacteria levels in the water can come from sources such as stormwater runoff, septic system failures, sewer overflows, wildlife waste, and agricultural runoff, as per CBS News Boston report.
Despite some closures, several beaches—like Pleasure Beach, City Point, and others in South Boston—remain open and have been recognized for high water quality.
