
Bringing healthcare directly to the streets, the Maui Police Department has reported on its recent initiative to extend a helping hand to the island's houseless population. On June 23, the Mobile Medical Education Unit (MMEU) made a stop at Kalama Park in Kihei, offering an array of services ranging from mental health support to non-critical wound care. Multiple community partners were involved in this outreach effort, bringing both expertise and resources to the table; according to the Maui Police Department's social media post, Aloha House was present providing information on substance use and mental health services to 14 participants while the Department of Education and Maui Aids Foundation distributed essentials like food and hygiene kits, they and also offered resources on medical QUEST, additionally even conducting four free STD tests on site.
The MMEU is scheduled to be at Kalama Park every Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to noon throughout June. The program is part of Maui’s ongoing efforts to provide support services to the houseless population, as outlined in the Maui Police Department’s social media post.
