Washington's urban landscape continues to evolve as Mayor Muriel Bowser inaugurated the newly designed Mamie "Peanut" Johnson Plaza in NoMa. According to a Office of the Mayor announcement, this morning event also marked the completion of the Florida Avenue Multimodal Streetscape Project. Both projects are aimed at enhancing safety and connectivity in one of the city's busiest corridors.
The renovation of what was previously known as Dave Thomas Circle is expected to significantly reduce the risks associated with what was once a notoriously dangerous intersection. Mayor Bowser and the District Department of Transportation have to decisively act to make changes that include the addition of two-way traffic on First Street NE and restoring two-way traffic on Florida Avenue NE. The improvements didn't stop there; they introduced new protected bike lanes, advanced pedestrian paths, and improved vehicle flow to tackle driver confusion head-on.
Last week's fiscal revelations set the stage for today's celebration. Mayor Bowser's Fiscal Year 2026 Budget, dubbed "Grow DC," reflects a robust commitment to transportation and infrastructure enhancements throughout the nation's capital. The budget includes a hefty $76 million injection to bolster WMATA's bus and rail services, as well as over $800 million earmarked for bridge work and maintaining roads, sidewalks, and alleys.
Efforts to promote green transportation were also apparent in the budget outline, with a $13 million provision to expand the Capital Bikeshare system. To further encourage residents to leave their cars at home, an investment of $73 million is slated to build out an extensive pedestrian and bicycle trail network. These measures are designed to seamlessly integrate into the existing fabric of the city and to eventually see to eliminate transportation dead zones.
