Mayor Eric Adams has signed into legislation the creation of the East Harlem 125th Street Business Improvement District (BID), a development that is set to revitalize the East Harlem area with support for its businesses and community organizations. This district joins the ranks of 77 BIDs across New York City, as noted in the City of New York's official announcement, which also highlighted the BIDs' collective investments surpassing $207 million in city neighborhoods just within Fiscal Year 2024. The East Harlem BID is expected to further Mayor Adams' blueprint for economic recovery by providing services like sanitation and beautification while advocating for neighborhood interests.
The legislation was sponsored by Councilmember Diana Ayala and marks the culmination of a nearly decade-long effort by the steering committee of the BID, the New York City Small Business Services (SBS), and Uptown Grand Central, as detailed by the City of New York's announcement. The creation process began with a Commercial District Needs Assessment, identifying key opportunities for economic growth, which the new BID now seeks to capitalize on. In addition, Mayor Adams also declared investments of $4.4 million in fresh grants towards community organizations throughout Harlem and other boroughs to bolster small businesses and nonprofit initiatives, further pushing local economic opportunity.
"East Harlem is a place of rich history, extraordinary culture, and incredible food," Mayor Adams stated, emphasizing the need for a community that is "safe, clean, and thriving" — a goal central to the BID's mission, as per the City of New York's official statement received. SBS Commissioner Dynishal Gross also shared her excitement about the inclusion of the East Harlem BID into the city's BID network, predicting a positive impact on the commercial and communal vitality of the area.
This legislative decision fits within a broader framework of economic funding facilitated by the Adams administration, including more than $44 million poured into neighborhood revitalization and commercial corridor development since 2022. The Avenue NYC Commercial Revitalization Grants, boasting a $1.2 million allocation for 12 groups, and the Public Realm Grants, investing $1,055,000 across 13 organizations, are aimed at enriching community spaces through various enhancements like lighting projects and public art installations, transforming the public realm into a vibrant canvas for commerce and community engagment.
